Its HDMI output connects to the TV, and its analog audio output on the 1\/8&#8243; jack connects to a pair of self-powered studio monitors. That all works well.<\/p>\n<p>Then the optical drive in the Mac decided to stop working,\u00a0so I connected the old DVD player to the TV. But the DVD player&#8217;s audio cannot be (easily) routed to the studio monitors; it has to go through the television.<\/p>\n<p>The TV has a digital-audio output, so I bought a cheap Monoprice DAC and connected its TOSLINK input to the TV and its RCA audio outs to the monitors. That works, except that the TV&#8217;s digital-audio output doesn&#8217;t follow the TV&#8217;s volume control. I guess they expect users to connect it to a receiver, which would obviously have its own volume control with remote.<\/p>\n<p>So the solution? A simple IR remote volume control, based on the <a title=\"PGA2320\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ti.com\/product\/PGA2320\" target=\"_blank\">TI PGA2320<\/a>. It uses the <a title=\"THAT 1240\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thatcorp.com\/1240-series_Balanced_Line_Receiver_ICs.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">THAT 1240<\/a>\u00a0dual differential line receiver\u00a0for the balanced audio input and a pair of\u00a0<a title=\"THAT 1646\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thatcorp.com\/1600-series_Balanced_Line_Driver_ICs.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">THAT 1646<\/a>\u00a0differential line drivers for the balanced audio output. A Silicon Labs <a title=\"C8051F314\" href=\"http:\/\/www.silabs.com\/products\/mcu\/8-bit\/c8051f31x\/pages\/C8051F314.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">C8051F314<\/a>\u00a0micro runs the show, managing a Vishay <a title=\"TSOP34838\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vishay.com\/ir-receiver-modules\/list\/product-82489\/\" target=\"_blank\">TSOP34838<\/a> IR receiver, a Newhaven Displays <a title=\"NHD-0216HZ-FSW-FBW-33V3C\" href=\"http:\/\/www.newhavendisplay.com\/nhd0216hzfswfbw33v3c-p-5169.html\" target=\"_blank\">NHD-0216HZ-FSW-FBW-33V3C<\/a>\u00a016-character-by-two-line LCD, and a Bourns <a title=\"PEC09\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bourns.com\/data\/global\/pdfs\/PEC09.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">PEC09-2320F-S0015<\/a> rotary encoder.\u00a0It all fits into a Hammond <a title=\"Hammond 1455\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hammondmfg.com\/1455.htm\" target=\"_blank\">1455N1201BK<\/a> enclosure.<\/p>\n<p>All programming was done in C, with the Keil compiler\u00a0which is part of the Silicon Labs Simplicity Studio tools. The PCB was designed using very recent builds of Kicad.
